Hey! Let’s jump back in with a quick life recap and get back to it. The remainder of 2019 went pretty good and our family spent time enjoying everything that Alaska had to offer. In the spring of 2020 when everything came to a standstill, we received orders to leave Alaska. We made a mid-pandemic 4,000 mile journey to the South.
We’ve settled in to our new home and somewhat of a routine. Now that life is not as crazy, I‘ve been having this constant tug to turn off social media. It’s crazy to even admit how much pull these social media sites have over your everyday life. Your 5 minute check in turns into a daily habit of 2+ hours wasted of endless scrolling and pirated memes.
About a month ago, I saw a book at Hobby Lobby. I really couldn't get it out of my mind. It intrigued me and scared me at the same time. I mentioned this to my sisters and they were interested as well. My oldest sister shared her struggles with social media and explained her newest approach of dealing with too much social media. She deleted everything (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest) and only kept Messenger for communicating with family and Instagram, which allows her to continue to showcase her side hustle of handmade journals while still filtering out 99% of the negativity that is spewed all over social media.
Last March when the world hunkered down, is seemed like the hatred and ugliness quadrupled online. The ongoing political unsavoriness in our country hasn‘t helped matters either.
Wendy Speake's "The 40-Day Social Media Fast" seemed like the perfect book to help me tackle my own struggles with social media. Lent begins this Wednesday and what a perfect time to give something up.
